FAQ – Recreational

How long is the dance season?

Our classes begin the first week of September and run until the second week of June.  We finish out the year with our professionally staged annual recital in which all students have the opportunity to perform and show off what they have learned during the year. For more information about our annual recitals click HERE. After the big performance our students come back to the studio for one final week of fun. Dancers can bring a friend to dance and get to take part in our Student Appreciation Day which includes BBQ, bouncy castles, obstacle courses and MORE!

How old does my child need to be to begin dance classes?

Our youngest dance program is Parent and Tot which begins at walking and includes both guardian and child in the class. This class runs in 8 week sessions.  We also over Mini Movers (ages 2-5), which is a program offered during the day that allows children to explore movement and music as well as crafts, sensory exploration and games.  Both classes are great introductions to the studio and social time with other children.

Once a child is 2 they can attend ‘Intro to Dance’ in which parent involvement is optional.  Once that class develops through the year the goal is to have all the dancers in the room on their own.  This class is part of our annual recital in June. Pre-Dance (ages 3-5) is for dancers who are comfortable in the room on their own.

Once a child is 4 they are able to explore more styles of dance such as jazz/hip hop, tap, and acro. We offer classes for all ages up to adults! All of our lessons are offered at beginner, intermediate, advanced recreational and competitive levels.

What styles of dance does your studio offer?

We have a large variety of dance styles for those new to dance or the more experienced dancer to choose from. PSD offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, acro, modern, stretch & strengthen, song and dance, and musical theatre.

Do you hold classes on holidays?

n order to allow all of our students and teachers time with their families we do close for all stat holidays as well as during the school Christmas holiday. Otherwise we are in the studio dancing!

What does my child need to wear to dance class?

All our dancers are required to have proper dance shoes to participate in our classes (ex. Jazz shoes, ballet slippers, tap shoes, foot paws, etc). As for dancewear, we encourage all our ballet students to wear a body suit and tights, and form fitting active wear for all other styles. Proper clothing is important to getting the most out of your dance class – this allows the teacher to correct proper alignment and technique that street clothes would otherwise cover up.

How do I register?

You can register for any of our programs online!  All of our class registration runs on a first come, first served basis.  Please register early to avoid disappointment!

Can I watch my child’s lessons?

Parents are welcome to watch lesson from our viewing window and/or closed circuit camera available at both our Millbrook and Peterborough locations.

What if my child needs to withdrawal from their dance class?

At Premiere we are confident that your child will love their dance class! However we also understand that picking a style of dance can be a difficult task when you are new to dance.  It is our policy to switch a student’s class to a different style at no additional charge. If for some reason you are not wishing to continue your lessons with Premiere you are eligible for a refund (minus classes attended, the membership fee, and refund processing fee), as long as we receive notice before December 1st.  If you withdrawal after December 1st unfortunately there is no refund as we have closed our registration period and year end costumes have been ordered. We are confident that we will be able to find the perfect dance class for your child!

Are there any extra expenses I should be aware of?

Included with your membership fee and lessons is a costume deposit which goes towards the making of a costume for our year-end performance.  Each dancer receives a custom made costume that is ready to wear on show day! The balance on this costume will required when you pick it up from the office (usually in the spring). Families should budget between $40-$125 per recreational costume. All costumes are yours to keep and any alterations (if needed), are done by our seamstresses at no additional charge to you. Finally our year-end recital is held in a professional theatre (Showplace Performance Centre), and is a ticketed event. Tickets are available through the Showplace box office about a month prior to show time and are approx $30.

Are your teachers trained?

All of our teachers are trained through the B.A.T.D. (British Association of Teachers of Dancing), and have many years of experience teaching dancers of all ages and levels.  Our instructors all have unique qualifications including Early Childhood Education, Gymnastics certification, University degrees, dance competition adjudicators, and are award winning choreographers and more!  Plus our teachers pride themselves on taking workshops, classes and continuing their dance education throughout the year in order to bring our students the very best, and current dance training.
