FAQ – Recreational

Q
What is the plan if there is another government mandated shut down due to Covid-19?
A
In the case that we are mandated to shut down (or return to phase 2), it is our hope that it would be temporary (4-8 weeks). In that case we will continue to teach our normal classes at their normal times for their scheduled time length but at 25% off their usual cost.  By doing so, our dancers will have kept up their current training so that once are allowed to return to phase 3, (regular in person classes), our dance season will proceed as planned.
Should a mandated shut down go for longer than 8 weeks it is possible that the entire comp season/year end recital is once again in jeopardy, and at that time we will give all students the option to opt out of Zoom classes.  Lesson fees will be calculated based on the weeks completed and accounts will be brought up to date for when we can open once again (as we are doing now).

We are optimistic that we will be able to complete this season with all our safety precautions.  Check out our protocols here https://www.premieredance.ca/covid-19-keeping-your-dancer-safe/

Q
I am home schooling this year and am interested in day-time classes? What are your options?
A

We are happy to arrange private or semi-private classes to suit your dancer’s needs during the day (when scheduled classes are not running).  Please send your request to privatelessons@premieredance.ca for more information.

Q
How long is the dance season?
A

Our classes begin the first week of September and run until the first week of June.  We finish out the year with our professionally staged annual recital in which all students have the opportunity to perform and show off what they have learned during the year. For more information about our annual recitals click HERE. After the big performance our students come back to the studio for one final week of fun. Dancers can bring a friend to dance and get to take part in our Student Appreciation Day which includes BBQ, bouncy castles, obstacle courses and MORE!

Q
How old does my child need to be to begin dance classes?
A

Our youngest dance program begins at pre-walking and includes both guardian and child in the class. Once a child is 2 they can attend class on their own. We offer Pre-Dance, which is a ballet based program, or Munchin Movement, which includes more creative movement and is a little less structured. Once a child is 4 they are able to explore more styles of dance such as jazz, tap and even hip hop. We offer classes for all ages up to adults! All of our lessons are offered at beginner, intermediate, and competitive levels.

Q
What styles of dance does your studio offer?
A

We have a large variety of dance styles for those new to dance or the more experienced dancer to choose from. PSD offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, acro, modern, stretch & strengthen, song and dance, and musical theatre.

Click here to learn more about the various styles!

Q
Do you hold classes on holidays?
A

In order to allow all of our students and teachers time with their families we do close for all stat holidays as well as during the school Christmas holiday. Otherwise we are in the studio dancing!

Q
What does my child need to wear to dance class?
A

All our dancers are required to have proper dance shoes to participate in our classes (ex. Jazz shoes, ballet slippers, tap shoes, foot paws, etc). As for dancewear, we encourage all our ballet students to wear a body suit and tights, and form fitting active wear for all other styles. Proper clothing is important to getting the most out of your dance class – this allows the teacher to correct proper alignment and technique that street clothes would otherwise cover up.

Q
How do I register?
A

You can register for any of our programs at the studio, over the phone, or online!  All of our class registration runs on a first come, first served basis.  Please register early to avoid disappointment!

Q
Can I watch my child’s lessons?
A

At this time we are asking parents to only be in the waiting areas/inside the building when absolutely necessary.  (Masks are required in all indoor studio spaces when not dancing, or when physical distancing is not available). We hope to offer some ‘live stream’ open houses in the fall to showcase all our dancers are learning!

Q
Withdrawal procedures:
A

At Premiere we are confident that your child will love their dance class! However we also understand that picking a style of dance can be a difficult task when you are new to dance.  It is our policy to switch a student’s class at no additional charge. If for some reason you are not wishing to continue your lessons with Premiere you are eligible for a refund (minus classes attended, the membership fee, and refund processing fee), as long as we receive notice before December 1st.  If you withdrawal after December 1st unfortunately there is no refund as we have closed our registration period and year end costumes have been ordered. We are confident that we will be able to find the perfect dance class for your child!

Q
Are there any extra expenses I should be aware of?
A

Included with your membership fee and lessons is a costume deposit which goes towards the making of a costume for our year-end performance.  Each dancer receives a custom made costume that is ready to wear on show day! The balance on this costume will required when you pick it up from the office (usually in the spring). Families should budget between $35-$50 per recreational costume. All costumes are yours to keep and any alterations (if needed), are done by our seamstresses at no additional charge to you. Finally our year-end recital is held in a professional theatre (Showplace Performance Centre), and is a ticketed event. Tickets are available through the Showplace box office about a month prior to show time and are between $20-$25

Q
Are your teachers trained?
A

All of our teachers are trained through the B.A.T.D. (British Association of Teachers of Dancing), and have many years of experience teaching dancers of all ages and levels.  Our instructors all have unique qualifications including Early Childhood Education, Gymnastics certification, University degrees, dance competition adjudicators, and award winning choreographers and more!  Plus our teachers pride themselves on taking workshops, classes and continuing their dance education throughout the year in order to bring our students the very best, and current dance training.
